Any thoughts that somehow the Tories understood the gender issue - that they'd realised this was something they could use against the seemingly captured Labour Party - are rapidly vanishing. Apart from Kemi Badenoch, they just don't get it:
Rishi Sunak is expected to block legal plans that would bar schoolchildren from changing their gender identity amid warnings that they could leave the Tories on the “wrong side of history”.
Draft guidance stated that children should be allowed to socially transition with the consent of their parents — meaning that they could choose another pronoun or name and wear the uniform of the opposite sex.
Ministers subsequently commissioned legal advice on whether an outright ban on social transitioning in schools was possible. Victoria Prentis, the attorney-general, concluded that such a move would be unlawful under the Equality Act.
So change the Equality Act. You're the government.
One government source added there are fears that using legislation to ban children from social transitioning would be the modern equivalent of Section 28. This was introduced by Margaret Thatcher and banned the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities and was repealed in 2003. “It would leave us on the wrong side of history,” the source said.
The guidance has been the subject of intense debate in the government. Suella Braverman, the home secretary, and Kemi Badenoch, the women and equalities minister, have pushed for a tougher stance....
There have been claims of differences of opinion between Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, and Badenoch. Keegan has emphasised the importance of trans rights and said that it would be “unreasonable” to stop children from socially transitioning, provided there was parental consent. Badenoch has called for the guidance to be “robust”.
An education secretary who emphasises the "importance of trans rights" is not an education secretary who's fit for the job. Children need to be protected from this nonsense.
