The NY Times history regarding the Jews is not a good one. Everyone knows, I think, about how the paper played down stories of the Holocaust as it was happening, doing little reporting and burying what articles it did publish in the back pages.

Less well known may be the fact that until the 1960s, the paper wouldn't hire any Jews. The Sulzberger family were upwardly mobile German Jews who distanced themselves from the Jewish community. I think that they didn't want their Jewish origins to limit the appeal or credibility of their paper.

But this reporting on Gaza, or lack thereof, is absolutely maddening. And while it's getting out here and there about the distortions, the effects of the debunking won't equal the damage already done by that New York Times front page.
