You're quite right. When I was an A-level student in the early 70s, I thought that there was a kind of conventional thinking in the glaring 'wackiness' of the outrageous art students I went to college with. I was glad I studied the sciences.


I'm not sure that the British art world has entertained a shocking or subversive idea since 1944, when Francis Bacon painted his Three Studies for Figures at the Base of Crucifixion. I'd be very happy to be shown to be wrong, mind.

However, the way things are going an old O-level biology text will soon be just as shocking and subversive as Bacon was in his time, though the art establishment may be rather less receptive.
