The first-floor door was just for coming and going. Where I’m from, Swampoodle, the second-floor door was called the Juliet door. The older Italians there said it once had a very small oval shaped patio, and I guess that’s where it got its name. When this collapsed or rotted nobody replaced it and the door was sealed shut. But I have pictures of people hoisting heavy objects through the Juliet door, like bedposts.
I wonder how the first floor doorways worked.
