Recruiting Animal

I really enjoyed that. I've read about Lonnie Donegan but I don't know if I ever took the time to listen to anything of his on YouTube before.


I never heard any of this. But I looked up Donegan on YouTube and I heard him singing John Henry, the quintessential American folksong. He’s much better than Pete Seeger singing it.

"Better than Pete Seeger" is a fairly low bar. But yes, Donegan was a good singer.

Interesting that Donegan should have released an album called 'An Englishman Sings American Folk Songs' when he was born in Glasgow, the son of a Scottish father and Irish mother - even if his family did move to London when he was three. I suspect he'd be rather more conscious of his roots these days.
