“The SPLC announced Monday that it has agreed to pay Nawaz and Quilliam $3.375 million ...”

I’m surprised they have that kind of money.

SPLC is incredibly wealthy.

"Again, Zinsmeister at Philanthropy Roundtablecalls it out: “The SPLC is a cash-collecting machine. In 2015 it vacuumed up $50 million in contributions and foundation grants, a tidy addition to its $334 million holdings of cash and securities and its headquarters worth $34 million. ‘They’ve never spent more than 31 percent of the money they were bringing in on programs, and sometimes they spent as little as 18 percent. Most nonprofits spend about 75 percent on programs,’ noted Jim Tharpe, managing editor of the SPLC’s hometown newspaper, the Montgomery Advertiser, in a talk at Harvard’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism.”

I suspect the SPLC was split. Activists on the far left have no problem allying themselves with extremist Muslims and that is obviously where the original denunciation of Maajid Nawaz originated. So too the denunciation of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The language of the apology reads like a legal document.

No change on Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

'Since we published the Field Guide, we have taken the time to do more research and have consulted with human rights advocates we respect,” SPLC president Richard Cohen said in a statement. “We’ve found that Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam have made valuable and important contributions to public discourse, including by promoting pluralism and condemning both anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamist extremism.'

So, the SPLC's apology is that they included Maajid on a hit-list, labelling him an extremist without having bothered to find out anything about him?
