You are making the all-too common mistake of believing that the extreme left have principles just because they say they have principles. Elementary error. Ever since Lenin, the sole guiding principle of the extreme left has been the will to power, and they have shown many times that they will abandon any ally and fraternise with any previous enemy in order to attain that goal.

Some few of the moderate left will go over to the right, but most will go with the flow. And, in fact, to prove their loyalty they will become even more fanatical. This is why so many of Stalin's henchmen were former Mensheviks, and Robespierre's followers were former Girondins.

And, as documented by Michael Burleigh, many ex-Communists passed into the Nazi Party with ease.
