Farid Esack, head of BDS South Africa and a professor of Islamic studies at the University of Johannesburg, giving a lecture in Berlin:
What explains the power of Zionism?
In many ways what is happening here is a combination of economic interests - and in the United States, particularly the power of the Israeli lobby. So it is economic interests, the Israeli lobby, and in Europe, particularly in a country like Germany, it is the guilt of the past, and a very simplistic owning of that guilt.
A "simplistic owning of the guilt". After the Holocaust. Lovely.
Life in apartheid South Africa was infinitely better than life under the [Israeli] occupation, or life for Arabs inside 'Israel proper'. All our struggle heroes who have been there have come back and said that apartheid was a Sunday school picnic in comparison to life under Zionism.
