May 6, 1937 at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. As the lifting hydrogen gas burned and escaped from the rear of the Hindenburg, the tail dropped to the ground, sending a burst of flame punching through the nose. Ground crew below scatter to flee the inferno.
No "well, back to the old drawing board" this time. The Hindenburg disaster marked the final nail in the coffin for the airship era.
Very glad I don't have to work at the top of those ladders.

Lakehurst calls itself the "airship capital of the world". Irony, I guess.
