Lynskey's article is a good one, especially given its setting. But I must take issue with the idea that "First they came for the cartoonists".

Some years ago, they came for Salman Rushdie. Our caving in to those calling openly for his murder meant that soon there were fewer and fewer targets for them to come for. The cartoonists were left standing high and dry, courtesy of their courage and our cowardice.
