Redcross Way runs south off Southwark Street, near Borough Market. The junction is right under the bridge carrying mainline trains from London Bridge to Blackfriars and Charing Cross - opposite this. Up on the left it's boarded off, with a large fading London Underground sign on the fencing. The area's being used as a project works site for the Thameslink Programme through till 2015. Halfway along, right opposite The Boot and Flogger (yes, really), there are some gates - covered with ribbons:
There's a plaque in the middle there...More details at the Cross Bones site. It's worth a read for an insight into the colourful history of the area. There are Cross Bones events, run by John Constable, aka Crow - Southwark's answer to Hackney's Iain Sinclair, it sounds like, with an extra spicy dash of Aleister Crowley - who's the man mainly responsible for keeping alive the memory of the Winchester Geese:
John Crow's first encounter with The Goose spirit at Cross Bones was on 23rd November 1996. On that night she revealed The Book of The Goose, the first transmission of her secret teachings which grew into The Southwark Mysteries. On the 23rd of every month, to maintain the transmission Friends of Cross Bones read selected verses from The Southwark Mysteries and perform other simple rituals to honour the outcast - dead or alive. So there you go.
It's all a bit tawdry at the moment, but mayor Boris has expressed an interest:
Future development plans have yet to be worked up but will be prepared recognising the archaeological interest of this site. This will include consultation with all parties with an interest in the site.
We'll have to wait and see whether a permanent memorial will eventually be erected - a Garden of Remembrance perhaps. I hope so.
