I guess I'm all alone here, but I never understood all the fuss surrounding Dylan. As a singer, barking dogs sound better. As a songwriter, he's forgettable. The test of a good song is in the bridge, and Dylan hardly ever writes bridges. Billy Joel is far better.

Is it his lyrics? If so, I still don't get it. Sometimes the lyrics are just random words thrown on a page. Like this, which I think is a love song:

"King Kong, little elves
On the rooftops they dance
Valentino-type tangos"

Also, the lyrics seldom fit the music. Like "Farewell Angelina" again, melodically you expect a new thought, but he is still in the middle of a sentence. Billy Joel never does that.

Just my $.02.

Another $.02 -- Why can't Dylan hire a real harmonica player? He has a backup band anyway. When he ties that harmonica around his neck he looks like the chimney sweep in Mary Poppins, and doesn't sound half as good. He can't even "cup" it to get a good sound, he just sort of blows in and out.

Billy Joel better than Dylan? I think I may have to ban you from this blog. Anyway, Farewell Angelina was an outtake from Another Side of..., and is associated with Joan Baez. I don't think anyone would claim it was up there with Dylan's best.
