The Gush Emunim (religious settler) movement really represents the Jabotinsky branch of the early Zionist movement in religious garb. The split isn't between Jewishness and Israeliness, but between one particular (old) ideology and modern pragmatism. That's why some in the Likud see Sharon as betraying the party's ideological roots.
