"How does one otherwise explain a Brexit vote from Cornwall, so heavily reliant on EU funding?"

I imagine that it's because they would rather be reliant on their own efforts, rather than dependent on some here today-gone tomorrow largesse granted on a bureaucrat's whim.

So should all the poorer parts of the UK be reliant on their own efforts and not receive any money from the centre, either London or Brussells? Do you oppose all foreign aid on the same principle?

Martin Adamson

Well, there used to be an industry that supported tens of thousands of jobs - fishing in Cornwall - which was deliberately sold off and closed down. In return, they were compensated with grants. Similarly with dozens of other towns up the length of the East Coast - although they didn't all get grants. University Professors may not realise it, but lots of not-very-well-educated people think that it's better to have the jobs than the grants.

Bob-B

So there is going to be higher employment when we are out of the EU, is there? Not a view that many economists would endorse. But then they are probably University Professors, whose views can be dismissed like those of any other experts.

What a mess. UKIP will surely be the winner, either getting exit or a surge in support from voters who think they were robbed.

Martin Adamson

Are those the same expert economists who thought it was a good idea for Greece and Germany to share the same currency?

Bob-B

I assume it was the Greeks who were keen to join the Euro and that they somehow managed to persuade EU bureaucrats that it made sense. This has no bearing on the general point about experts. Experts don't always get things right, but it's better to rely on experts than people who know nothing. I suspect you agree with this in other domains. If you're ill, you probably go to see a doctor and don't just ask some bloke down the pub for advice.

Experts can help you get what you want, but only you can say what that is.
