I wonder if David Bowie was asked to feature in the Danny Boyle Olympics extravaganza:
Probably not; he's not exactly a man of the people, Mr Bowie. Not like cuddly Uncle Paul McCartney, who's the man to go to on these occasions as the official voice of the new hip-but-nice GB.
And there's the Thin White Line connection. Rather than years of hard training, working out, getting up at first light to go on another 10-mile run, there's the sense with Bowie that his favoured route to becoming a hero - just for one day - involved the nasal ingestion of a certain white powder. Not an image the Olympics would want to be associated with.
So, a quick blast as Team GB entered, and that was that. It was probably enough.
It is a great song though.
